AKMG Canada Meeting 2019

The 2019 annual convention of AKMG Canada was held in Toronto. This was an occasion to celebrate the success and contributions of our members to the society and the field of medicine. Dr. Bhavani Nair, a retired radiation oncologist was recognized with a life time achievement award. Mr. Dinesh Bhatia, Consul General, Toronto, who was completing his term was recognized for the numerous innovations he brought to the Toronto Consulate (CGI, Toronto) and the community outreach programs during his term. Mr. Manoj Karatha was recognized for his outstanding and relentless support for multiple cultural and community activities over the years. Dr. Igor Jurisica, former Canada Research Chair in Bioinformatics (ranked in top 5 in the world in this field) spoke on artificial intelligence and how it could change our lives. The day ended with a fashion show and a musical extravaganza by popular artist Vidhyashankar.

AKMG Canada Toronto Meet Up

 

The January 2016 Meet of AKMG Canada was successfully held in Toronto. The participation was excellent and the talks outstanding. We all enjoyed the company and the food.

The speakers for the night delivered outstanding talks that were both informative and engaging. The talks were:

  1. Mentorship and Scholarship in a career in Academic Respiratory Medicine. Dr. Parameswaran Nair, MD, PhD, FRCP, FRCPC.
  2. Managing physician stress and preventing burnout. Dr. Shabbir Amanullah. MBBS, DPM, MD, MRCPsych, CCT(Geriatric Psychiatry), FRCPC.

Dr. Nair is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Respirology at McMaster University and a Staff Respirologist at the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton where he looks after patients with complex airway diseases, severe asthma and eosinophilic lung disorders. His laboratory, funded by federal and provincial agencies, the Canada Research Chair program, AllerGen National Centre of Excellence, and Industry partners, characterizes the types of bronchitis in airway diseases using biomarkers in sputum, identifies mechanisms of persistent bronchitis, and explores novel targeted therapies of bronchitis using small molecules and biologics.

Dr. Amanullah is an Asst. Professor of Psychiatry and Consultant Psychiatrist at the Woodstock General Hospital. He is internationally recognized and has conducted several group sessions for physician associations.

The talks and dinner were followed by an evening of entertainment with songs that evoked nostalgia and memories in all of us.
