KERALA FLOODS DISASTER RELIEF
OVER 400 DEATHS. 1 MILLION DISPLACED. URGENT HELP REQUIRED.
Kerala is situated in the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent and has a population of 35 million. This is 3% of India’s population and the density of population is three times the average for the country with 860/square Km.
Kerala is also known as the spice coast of India and God’s own country. People of various ethnicities including Arab and Jewish populate it. Kerala is s true shining star in India with the highest literacy rate of over 90%, highest education standards, life expectancy of 74 years, lowest infant and maternal mortality and highest female to male ratio.
National geographic has listed Kerala as one of 50 trips of a lifetime. This beautiful and serene state met with a disaster recently. By early August, Kerala received close to 3 times the usual amount of rainfall resulting in over 30 dams across the state brimming with water at dangerous levels. What ensued were the worst floods of the century resulting in close to 400 deaths and over a million displaced. Many are still missing and displaced with many areas not reachable by road.
The government machinery is working round the clock in collaboration with several NGOs including IMA and AKMG representatives. WHO and UN disaster relief experts have been helping lead the relief efforts. Rebuilding the state is an immediate need and action today can help prevent the outbreak of communicable diseases that can increase the death toll.
AKMG Canada and AKMG are raising funds to meet the necessary needs in collaboration with the state machinery. AKMG has set a target of $150,000.00 USD to be raised. AKMG has successfully reached half of that target.
AKMG Canada has set a target of $30,000 CAD. We are directing the funds to Global Medic to help provide clean water (both source and point of use) to the most needy people in Kerala. A total of $1000 can provide clean water at source for 1000 people and $40 can provide clean filtered water for a household for 1 year.
